By Trevor Utley Leave it to me to pick the guy who goes hitless in a 16-hit attack. That is exactly what I did last night with Houston's Carlos Correa, a move that clouded an otherwise sunny day here on Streaking In Public. It's time to get back up on the horse this evening with a fresh batch of baseball picks to return to the winning side of things. I'll be doubling down on Beat the Streak with two road boppers. Toronto's Josh Donaldson, fresh off being the leading All-Star vote getter, travels to U.S. Cellular Field to take on Jose Quintana and the White Sox. Detroit's J.D. Martinez has a late game with the Seattle Mariners and Taijuan Walker. Both men have little or no track records with their opposition, but I am betting on their recent record rather than matchup history. Donaldson has two hits in six career at-bats against Quintana, both singles. Martinez, like most of the Tigers outside of Anthony Gose, has never faced Walker before. Donaldson is killing the White Sox this year though, hitting .643 (9-for-14) with five home runs and a double. Martinez is on fire in the last seven days raking .483 (14-for-29) with five home runs of his own and 12 RBI. I am still taking the tortoise approach to Streak for the Cash. My one pick for today is Yovani Gallardo and the Texas Rangers as they host Robbie Ray and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gallardo got the snub from his constituents in All-Star voting, but he is looking to rebound from his last start against the Snakes. That was a 8-5 loss in April in which the Mexican ace was rocked for 5 runs (3 earned) in 5 innings. Here's to that turnaround and a W4 heading to hump day. HAPPY STREAKING EVERYBODY!!!!! Image Credits: Donaldson/Martinez BTS (mlb.com), Streak pick (espn.com) By Trevor Utley I've already began the streaking action for today as I look to build off a good Sunday. I'm riding more than W2's or greater in both games for the just the second time in two weeks. Man, I've really lowered my standards for what defines "good." And I have really low standards in that regard to begin with. Regardless, on to the picks! On Beat the Streak, I am going with a SIP double play combo in LA's Howie Kendrick and Houston's Carlos Correa to get me to a W8 for the first time since June 25th. Correa reached on a walk against Carlos Carrasco in his first at-bat of the night. Carrasco gave up five hits to the rest of the Astros' order and is down 4-0 after one inning. Correa will get his. Like Howie's non-related namesake Kyle Kendrick, I enjoy picking on Philadelphia's Sean O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan has been struggling to keep his ERA under 6.00 and has a ghastly 1.58 entering tonight's game at Dodger Stadium. Kendrick is one of the few Dodgers to have a track record against the bearded hurler, and it is a promising one. He went 2-for-4 in their only meeting. In the Streak for the Cash universe, I am at a W2 thanks to the United States Women's rout of Japan in the Women's World Cup Final. I am picking the Atlanta Braves tonight who send Matt Wisler to the mound opposed by Kyle Lohse and the lowly Brewers. Wisler was one of the prized prospects from the Craig Kimbrel trade and has more than held his own through three Major League starts. I am hoping tonight's is more like his first and third outing (2-0, 0.68 ERA) than his second (0-1, 9.00 ERA) HAPPY STREAKING EVERYBODY!!!!! LATE EDIT: Correa grounded out in his second at-bat. Image Credits: Kendrick/Correa BTS (mlb.com), Streak pick (espn.com) By Trevor Utley Felix Hernandez you will no longer betray my trust. You are on my Streak Shit List pal. You haven't quite been inducted into the I Hate You Entirely Because of Streak For The Cash Hall of Fame, but you're damn close. As for Adam Lind and Lorenzo Cain, thank you for making my 4th of July at least half enjoyable in the Streakiverse. I will be doubling down again today on Beat the Streak. I will be taking Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki against Rubby De La Rosa and the Arizona Diamondbacks. It is the ever so popular Battle of the De La Rosas as Jorge goes for the Rox. I could have picked somebody from either side of this game and been confident, but I decided to give Paul Goldschmidt a break since I've used him quite a bit as of late. My other BTS selection will be Kole Calhoun. I love the Angels against Texas' Colby Lewis today. The Halos have pounded the right hander to the tune of a 7.99 ERA over the past three seasons. Alas, I am still rather angry at Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, so Calhoun takes the spot. It is not as if he hasn't had his successes against Lewis. He is 8-for-16 lifetime against him with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. I once again make the day all about baseball as I am taking the Pirates on Streak for the Cash. Gerrit Cole is making a very good case to be the starter in the All-Star Game for the National League. Cleveland's Danny Salazar is one start removed from getting his head metaphorically torn off by the Tigers. Gerrit Cole for the W1 BAY BAY! HAPPY STREAKING EVERYBODY!!!! LATE EDIT: Awww hell, putting my meager W1 on the line for the Women's World Cup Final. GO GO USA!
Image Credits: Tulowitzki/Calhoun BTS (mlb.com), Streak picks (espn.com) By Trevor Utley I figured that it would be appropriate for the 4th of July to actually get a Streaking In Public done before the games I am picking actually occur. A novel concept, I know! It is going to be all about America's pastime again here on SIP, mostly because I couldn't bring myself to root for any result from the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Has there ever been a death at that event? There has to have been. On Beat the Streak, I am taking two players from All-American, wholesome midwestern teams on either end of the standings. The Brewers stink, but Adam Lind has been good and takes on rookie Josh Smith (not to be confused with the NBA free agent) today. Smith has had control issues over his first two MLB starts, which means Lind could get an early crack at Cincinnati's 26th ranked bullpen. For the other pick, it is the Royals' Lorenzo Cain. Cain is in line to make the All-Star team and unlike some of his fellow Royals he actually deserves it. He takes on Mike Pelfrey and the Twins this evening. Cain is 4-for-9 lifetime against the Minnesota right hander with a double and 2 RBI. I fully expect to ride my fine luck from last night to a W4 today. On Streak for the Cash, I am playing with fire in picking the Seattle Mariners. After two wins earlier in the year from the M's on Streak, I bore witness to a dumpster fire of a start from King Felix in which Houston pounded the King to the tune of eight earned in 1/3 of an inning. Hernandez takes the bump again tonight against Kendall Graveman and the Oakland A's. I picked successfully with Oakland two days ago, but Graveman has been a bugaboo for me both on SFTC and in fantasy baseball so I am going against him. HAPPY STREAKING AND FOURTH OF JULY EVERYBODY!!!! Image Credits: Lind/Cain BTS (mlb.com), Streak pick (espn.com) By Trevor Utley It is nearly 1 AM Eastern Time here in Rhode Island, but I am putting out this retrospective Streaking In Public anyhow. It will be short as you the reader is about to either fall asleep yourself or just start your day if you are overseas. Beat the Streak continued to beat me up as Paul Goldschmidt torpedoed my double down after an 0-fer against Brett Anderson and the Dodgers. He was previously hitting over .600 against Anderson entering tonight's game so I felt the usually reliable Goldschmidt would be a lock. Paul took that feeling and threw it in the trash, right next to my hopes of the Knicks ever being viable championship contenders again in my lifetime. My return to Streak for the Cash was less gloomy, but by the slightest of margins. I needed an injury time, heartbreaking own goal by Laura Bassett to green my Japanese pick from the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup. They will meet the USA in the finals. What will I pick tomorrow? It surely won't be fucking tennis! HAPPY STREAKING EVERYBODY!!!! Image Credits: Goldschmidt/Harper BTS (mlb.com), Streak pick (espn.com) By Trevor Utley Well, my all-Oakland strategy didn't go so hot last night. I was successful on Streak for the Cash, but combined to go 0-for-8 through Billy Burns and Steven Vogt. How would I respond to this event? I'll be going all in on Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. Yup, I never learn. Paul Goldschmidt is currently 2-for-2 against Kyle Kendrick while AJ Pollock hasn't gotten on the board yet. Hopefully that will change as Arizona trails Colorado 3-2 in the fifth inning. Well, we might as well sit through the rest of this AJ Pollock at-bat. Huzzah!!!!! He got a single...but got thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. D'Backs still down 3-2. Hopefully they get to this suspect Rockies bullpen soon. HAPPY STREAKING EVERYBODY!!!! (TOMORROW) Image Credits: Goldschmidt/Pollock BTS (mlb.com), Streak pick (espn.com) By Trevor Utley It may be a bit of planning but just as much a lack thereof. I didn't get a chance to pick in Beat the Streak during the day today so I had to package together my double down with my Streak for the Cash pick. I am hoping for straight W's from the straight A's. Wow, that was horrible. Just as horrible as if I head into tomorrow with nothing but losses on my hands. Image Credits: Vogt/Burns BTS (mlb.com), Streak pick (espn.com) |
