The events of yesterday in the Streakiverse backfired on me worse than my dad's old Mercury Lynx. An absolutely scintillating Game 7 between the Clippers and the Spurs left me on the wrong side of my player usage. Chris Paul sent the defending champions home with a banker with 1.0 seconds left, leaving me without three huge chips in the second round. I hope this isn't the last we've seen of Tim Duncan, Gregg Popovich, and company. My attempts to conjure up more Chicago magic were thwarted as Jose Abreu and the White Sox were held at bay by the Twins. The only game I well in is the one I am usually the worst at. Go figure.
After yesterday's disappointment, I am doubling down on Beat the Streak. As you can see, I am really going out on a limb here. Yup, Dee Gordon and Adrian Gonzalez, my two shining knights in this game, team up for the first time to end the weekend on a positive note. Gordon and the Marlins play host to wretched Philadelphia who will send Severino Gonzalez and his AVERT YOUR EYES CHILDREN 23.62 ERA(!) to the mound. Gonzalez and my beloved Dodgers will take on Chase Anderson and the Diamondbacks at Chavez Ravine. Anderson sports an ERA over 19 points better than Gonzalez's, but El Titan has 3 hits (plus 4 walks) in 7 at-bats against him with a home run.
There will be no more tinkering with strategies in Streak For The Cash. I am sticking to what works and discarding any potential cuteness I could use in terms of this soul eating game. The Cardinals were able to defeat the Pirates' best pitcher yesterday. Who am I to think that they can't beat one of their worst? Worley isn't horrible but he is one of the lesser pitchers at Pittsburgh's disposal going up against St. Louis' Michael Wacha. Wacha has rediscovered his Flocka Flame...and I'll go sit in the corner now.
Finally in the Drive To The Finals, I hope to erase my erroneous backing of the Spurs yesterday by putting my faith in a team with no history of playoff success, the Atlanta Hawks. The pick today is John Wall because I think Atlanta is a horrible matchup for Chocolate City. Washington isn't going to get swept or anything, but I feel in the end the outside shooting of the Hawks will be more than the Wiz can handle. HAPPY STREAKING EVERYBODY!!
